Portwell PCOM-B65A: New module based on new Intel Core Ultra

Taiwan-based embedded systems manufacturer Portwell has launched a new COM Express Type 6 base module. This module is called Portwell PCOM-B65AIt is based on the Intel Core Ultra processor platform and can come with H-series or U-series processors from the same series.

The Series Intel Core Ultra (14th Gen) Formerly known as Meteor Lake, it uses Intel’s hybrid 3D performance architecture, which consists of a SoC with a complex architecture. and promises to be improved over previous versions. This architecture increases efficiency and distributes workloads efficiently. There is also an integrated neural processing unit on offer. AI acceleration Low consumption with integrated NPU such as AMD Ryzen with Ryzen AI or Apple with Neural Engine.

The PCOM-B65A COM Express module’s I/O and AI feature set makes it Suitable for embedded applications such as medical devices. IoT automation and industrial control, etc..and all this in small size As it follows the basic COM Express form factor (125×95 mm).

What is the COM Express module?

g COM Express module Also known as Computer-On-Module which is a small form factor processing component This standard, defined by PICMG, provides a method for achieving complete equipment for applications where size is critical. and has relatively high connectivity capabilities

For example, it depends on the size we can have. Various sizes: :

  • Mini (84x55mm): Used for category 10 low power modules.
  • Compact size (95x95mm): Used for type 6 modules, such as the Portwell case we describe here.
  • Basic (95×125 mm.): Used for both type 6 and type 7 modules.

COM Express modules are divided into various typesEach of them has a specific set of features and functionality. And there are advantages and disadvantages. This depends on the specific application you will be using:

  • Type 2– These modules are backward compatible with legacy interfaces such as PCI and PATA.
  • Type 6: This type of module has an additional PCI Express slot, USB 3.x, DisplayPort output and no longer has a PEG port multiplexed with a graphics signal.
  • Type 7– This type was recently introduced to enable server type applications. It has up to 4 10 Gb Ethernet ports and up to 32 PCI Express slots. It is designed to work without a graphical interface.
  • Type 10: Category 10 low power modules are installed using the Mini size in applications that require low power consumption.
